The Role of Karana
The word Karana literally means “doing” or “making,” and that pretty much explains its purpose. In a Muhurta (the timing of an event), the Karana is the driving force that makes things happen and allows them to take shape in the real world.
If the Karana at the chosen time is supportive, the effort needed to carry the work forward and see it through feels smooth and worthwhile.
But when the Karana is unfavourable, the amount of work required to maintain progress or bring a task to completion often feels heavier than it’s worth.
Lords of the Karanas
Each Karana draws its strength from a ruling planet, and this planetary influence decides whether the action will flow easily or meet obstacles.
- If the Karana’s ruler is strong and well-placed, you will naturally take the right steps and your actions will lead to success.
- If the ruler is weak or poorly placed, the circumstances may overwhelm you or push you into wrong decisions, causing stress or delays.
The fixed Karanas are a little different—they don’t have planetary rulers. Instead, you look at the Sun and Moon (the creators of the Karana cycle) to judge how supportive they are
Karanas to Avoid
Certain Karanas are generally not chosen for auspicious beginnings.
The four fixed Karanas—Sakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, and Kimstughna—along with Vishti (Bhadra), are traditionally marked as difficult for happy, beneficial events.
- These Karanas can favour acts of aggression, power moves, or destructive deeds.
- When used for positive work, they demand extra effort and often fail to deliver satisfying results.
Vishti Karana, ruled by Saturn, is not as harsh as the four fixed ones, but it still brings heavy workloads and delays. Even if success comes, it may feel like too much labour for too little reward.
A few saving factors can soften Vishti:
- Jupiter or Venus strong in an angle,
- all three benefics well-placed in angles or trines,
- or simply performing the task after midday.

TO BE CHECKED ALWAYS
- Chatushpada: Linked to cattle, Brahmins, ancestors, political or national affairs.
- Naga: Suitable for immovable assets, forceful actions, or even cruel tasks.
- Kinstughna: Favours sacrifices, nourishing activities, marriages, and uplifting deeds.
Among all, Gara and Vanija are considered the safest and most beneficial for almost any good activity.
An interesting observation is that during the 7–8 September Grahan (eclipse), the Karana at the main time of the eclipse was Dhriti, which itself indicates careful planning and calculated action.
It suggests that the event was not merely an emotional outburst but something strategically orchestrated—possibly involving a female influence in Nepal.
If you look closer at the panchang:
- Balava Yoga was active, a lunar influence that heightens sensitivity and emotional undercurrents.

Understanding Bhadra (Vishti)
भद्रायै नमो नित्यं शूलिनी चण्डिकायै ।
शुभं कुरु मम कार्ये सर्वमङ्गलकारिणि ॥
Vishti Karana is popularly called Bhadra, personified as a form of Lord Shiva. It is a movable Karana but carries a strong cautionary note.
Mouth and Tail of Bhadra
Bhadra isn’t entirely negative; it has a mouth and a tail, which split its duration into four equal parts (each about 1½ degrees).
- The mouth is the most unfavourable. Any good activity started during this period suffers fully from Bhadra’s ill effects. Malicious deeds, however, gain extra force.
- The tail, which comes at the very end of Bhadra, is comparatively safe and can be used when no better timing is available.
Each lunar fortnight determines exactly when the mouth and tail occur (for example, the mouth may start in the first part of the 4th Tithi of Shukla Paksha, or the second part of the 10th Tithi of Krishna Paksha, and so on).
Jyotishis observed:
“भद्रायाः पुच्छभागे कार्यं सर्वं निराश्रयम् ।”
Bhadrāyāḥ puccha-bhāge kāryaṃ sarvaṃ nirāśrayam
(In the tail of Bhadra, actions are sheltered from harm.)
Where Bhadra Resides
The impact of Bhadra also changes depending on where the Moon is placed:
- On Earth (Mrityuloka): Moon in Cancer, Leo, Aquarius, or Pisces.
- In Heaven (Svargaloka): Moon in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, or Scorpio.
- In the Underworld (Patalaloka): Moon in Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, or Capricorn.
When Bhadra resides on Earth (Moon in Cancer, Leo, Aquarius, or Pisces), its effects are strongest.
If you must perform a good deed during Bhadra, it’s safest when the Moon is not in these Earth signs.
On the other hand, if the activity is negative or aggressive, Bhadra on Earth gives it extra.
Some Use-
A Merchant’s Bargain:
An old trader of Varanasi once ignored his astrologer’s warning and began a gold deal during Bhadra’s mouth. The shipment was delayed, the gold lost half its price, and the deal collapsed—exactly as the scriptures caution.
A Devotee’s Vow:
On the other hand, a devotee who had no choice but to perform a small Griha–Pravesha during Bhadra’s tail reported smooth success, the house filling with peace. The tail indeed carries the grace of Lord Shiva, ending hardships
Bhadra is not a demon to fear but a Shakti to respect.
She teaches patience, humility, and the art of timing.
“कालो हि दुरतिक्रमः”
Kālo hi duratikramaḥ (Mahabharata)
Time itself is invincible.
When Bhadra rules, bow to Mahadeva, chant “ॐ नमः शिवाय”, and postpone what is postpone-able.
If duty cannot wait, choose the tail and surrender the result to the Lord.
